Two own goals and a strike by Andrei Arshavin helped Russia to a 3-0 Group 4 victory over Finland at the Lokomotiv Stadium in Moscow.

Restorative result
Guus Hiddink's side were looking to bounce back from a narrow 2-1 defeat in Germany in the weekend round of FIFA World Cup qualifiers and they got off to the perfect start after 23 minutes. Yuri Zhirkov's shot ricocheted first off Finland keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen and then off Petri Pasanen before trickling into the net. If this was to be Russia's second win in three qualifiers, it also marked a first defeat in three for Stuart Baxter's visitors, whose luck was definitely out when Veli Lampi doubled the deficit midway through the second half with another own goal. Arshavin sealed the home success two minutes from time.

Finland defended in numbers throughout the opening period and should have been 2-0 down before half-time, with Arshavin and strike partner Pavel Pogrebnyak getting in each other's way after Jaaskelainen failed to hold on to the former's initial shot. The second goal eventually came after 64 minutes and Arshavin was again involved. The FC Zenit St. Petersburg maestro burst through before playing in Ivan Saenko whose right-wing cross was inadvertently turned into the net by Lampi. The Finns might have scored themselves but Daniel Sjolund's shot flew wide, and they were made to pay for that wastefulness on 88 minutes when Arshavin finally got his goal calmly rounding Jaaskelainen before nudging the ball into an empty net., 15 October 2008
