Date of birth: 9 January 1930 (died: 30 March 1999)
Igor Netto captained the Soviet Union to victory in the 1956 Olympic Games
in Melbourne. A stylish left-half, he led the Soviets by example, captaining
them from 1954 to 1963 and collecting 54 international caps and four goals
in the process.
However, injury meant he missed all but one match at the 1958 FIFA World
Cup finals. In 1962, he played in all four games when the Soviets reached
the quarter-finals in Chile.
Altogether he scored 37 goals in 367 league games for FC Spartak Moskva,
winning five Soviet championships and three cups. Awarded the Order of
Lenin in 1957, but after retiring in 1966 he returned to his first love
as an ice hockey coach.
