Guus Hiddink may take the reins of the Socceroos for the 2010 World Cup
in South Africa after his stint with the Russian national side, according
to Football Federation Australia chief John O'Neill.
Speaking to SEN radio, O'Neill said that the Dutch manager, who led Australia
to its first World Cup finals in 32 years, had expressed an interest in
again preparing the Socceroos for the biggest event in football.
Hiddink has signed on to coach Russia until after the Euro 2008 tournament,
leaving him theoretically free for a return to head up the Australian
coaching staff.
"I think you have to say that he is in the mix. Two years is a long
time but he has sent a lot of hints he will come back," O'Neill said.
But O'Neill also conceded that the likelihood of Hiddink returning to
his old post may be affected by the success he is able to have with the
Russian team, possibly indicating that the FFA probably couldn't match
an offer made by the Dutchman's new bosses.
"He may take Russia to big things in Euro 2008 and they will want
to keep him on board and make him an incredible offer."
