30,000 police officers to be deployed for 2010 FIFA World
Cup
Durban, Dec 13: South Africa will deploy more than 30,000 police officers
to ensure that the 2010 FIFA World Cup in the country is held without
any security problems.
Currently, South Africa had 1,56,000 police officers and the government
planned to increase the number to more than 1,90,000 over the next three
years, of which 30,000 would be deployed for the World Cup, Deputy Minister
of Safety and Security Andre Pruis said at a meeting.
"The 30,000 officers will be deployed across different police sectors
including intelligence, VIP protection, border and route security",
he said.
"More than 30,000 of the total number of police officers in 2010
will concentrate on providing security to the actual events, officials
and supporters during the competition. There will be a dedicated team
of officers in each sector.
"Police will also be patrolling roads between airports and hotels
as well as roads between stadia and hotels to ensure that visitors are
protected at all times", Pruis said.
Police would also procure a fleet of 40 helicopters and command vehicles
which would boast of a state-of-the-art technology link with the police
head office In Pretoria.
The South African Government had allocated about USD 2,142 billion for
the 2010 World Cup.
At the same briefing, Deputy Minister of Finance Jabu Moleketi said the
government was confident that the country would meet the various deadlines
for having the required infrastructure in place.
"We have set aside about R8.4 billion (USD 1.2 billion) to build
and upgrade stadia and close to R6 billion (USD 1 billion) would be utilised
to improve public transport infrastructure and communication systems,"
he said.
