Frank Rijkaard has steamed into the row between Holland
coach Marco van Basten and Louis van Gaal. AZ Alkmaar boss Van Gaal recently
said Van Basten was "not a good national team coach," but Rijkaard
has rushed to his former Netherlands and Milan team-mate's defence.
Van Gaal's outspoken remarks have also raised the ire of another Dutch
legend, Ronald Koeman, and Rijkaard was in no doubt that the former Oranje
coach was out of order.
"What Van Gaal is doing is shameless. Everybody has opinions, but
there are things that you should only say around the table with friends,
not in public," said Rijkaard.
"What is Van Gaal trying to do by making these observations? Does
he want to make a colleague's life difficult?"
Rijkaard and Van Basten were part of the 1998 European Championship-winning
Dutch side, and also won numerous honours together at Milan.
The Barcelona manager said Van Gaal had no grounds to criticise Van Basten's
mixed record as Dutch coach having himself failed to reach the 2002 World
Cup during his spell in charge.
"He should pay more attention to his own team, or does he want to
train several teams at once? I don't understand it.
"Moreover, when he was coach of the national team he didn't even
get to the World Cup."
