In a New Year's message from FIFA President Sepp Blatter
said that the 2010 World Cup to be held in South Africa could have far
- reaching implications for the world of football.
He said that in terms of health issues, education and peace the World
Cup in Africa will impinge on these issues.
He further added that the next three and a half years of preparation will
provide energy to the African continent.
Blatter also expressed the view that "a successful World Cup in 2010
will definitely contribute to the fight against racism and the marginalisation
of the African continent."
A long-standing friend of South Africa and a driving force behind ensuring
the country gained the right to host the World Cup, Blatter has reiterated
his confidence in the 2010 tournament proving a success.
Blatter still expressed concerns that in certain quarters, especially
the debacle in Cape Town, where construction of the stadium hadn't yet
begun.
