Ireland calls up Folan, O'Dea for Euro 2008 qualifiers
DUBLIN, Ireland (AP) - Wigan striker Caleb Folan and Celtic defender Darren
O'Dea could make their debuts for Ireland in European Championship qualifying
games against Wales and Slovakia.
Ireland coach Steve Staunton included the two newcomers Thursday in a
squad of 24 players for the two games as Ireland prepares for its first
matches at Croke Park.
The national team is using the 82,000-capacity stadium - usually used
for Gaelic sports - while Lansdowne Road is being renovated.
"Both players have been impressive in recent weeks and deserve their
call-up," Staunton said.
Staunton has recalled goalkeeper Shay Given and striker Kevin Doyle, who
both missed the 2-1 victory over San Marino on Feb. 7 through injury.
Defender Stephen Kelly also returns.
Ireland is third in Group D with seven points, three points behind both
Germany and the Czech Republic. The Germans and Czechs meet each other
on March 24, the same day Ireland hosts Wales. The Irish host Slovakia
four days later.
