Russian forward Aleksandr Kerzhakov made Euro-2008 three points closer
to Russia.
Satruday matches in Group E promised to be crucial for the
teams, struggling for a plce in Euro-2008 final tournament. However, little
has changed in the standings adter Saturday battles.
Croatia still lead the group, adding another three points with a hard
victory over Macedonia, 2:1.
Russia sit second and are still one point behind Croatia.
Russia visited Estonia on Saturday. However, the group outisders, with
no points gained and no goals scored so far, were no easy meat for Russia.
The hosts started the game with fierce attacks and were close to scoring
their first goal in the competition. Russia looked taken aback with the
course of the game and it took them quite a time to regain self-confidence.
Back from the lockers, Russia stepped up which soon got its reflection
on the scoreboard. Sevilla striker Aleksandr Kerzhakov slammed the ball
into the net in the 66th minute. Twelve minutes later Kerzhakov did not
leave Estonian keeper Mart Poom a ghost of a chance, scoring a beautiful
goal and burying Estonian hopes for a comeback.
The man of the match Aleksandr Kerzhakov commented on the match.
"I think we dominated throughout the game and had the situation under
control," said Kerzhakov to Sport Express.
"Estonia gave me no surprises and the fact that they had some decent
attempts on goal can be explained by mere luck on their side."
"We did not expect it to be easy as everyone fights to the bitter
end in European qaulifying rounds."
"Moreover, the previous games with Estonia were not a piece of cake
for us."
"However, today we overcame everything and beat the opponent."
"As for the pitch, I can say we were very quick to adapt to it."
"We won and that means the pitch was good for us."
"Today the team showed a very good display and had no problems with
cooperation."
"The newcomers also showed good work and I congratulate them on their
successful debuts."
"It is a good sign Hiddink caps the young and it did not tell on
our performance today."
The victory in Tallin let Russia extned their lead in the standings over
England. Steve McClaren's team gained only one point in their away-clash
with Israel, 0:0, and are now three points behind Russia.
