Ambassadors
PHILEMON MASINGA
Philemon Masinga scored the goal against Congo in 1997 that took Bafana
Bafana to its first FIFA World CupT appearance at France 1998. He was
also part of the team that won the African Nations Cup in 1996. Masinga
played for Jomo Cosmos and Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa and at Leeds
United in England.
"I am honoured to be an ambassador for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. It's
every player's dream to play in this tournament and for it to be hosted
in South Africa in 2010 is a great victory for the whole of Africa. African
players are buzzing in the leagues of Europe at the moment and are doing
really well. One day an African team will win the World Cup and I am really
hoping it will be on home soil in 2010. Africa's first World Cup will
be an exciting one. The whole world wants to know what's happening on
the African continent and they are in for a big surprise. In addition
to the football spectacle, they will find a warm, hospitable country with
so much to offer."
DOCTOR KHUMALO
Doctor Khumalo is one of South African football's most celebrated footballers.
He scored Bafana Bafana's first international goal in a 1-0 win against
Cameroon after South Africa was readmitted to FIFA after the apartheid
era. He played for Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa, Ferrocaril Oeste in
Argentina and Columbus Crew in the United States Major League Soccer.
He played 50 games for Bafana Bafana, scoring nine goals.
"I've been fortunate enough to have played in the World Cup in 1998.
It's every player's dream to participate in it. Now, South Africa's hosting
it and I've been given an opportunity to be an ambassador for the 2010
FIFA World Cup. What more can one ask for? It means a lot to me. It's
a recognition of what I've contributed to the game and I am over the moon.
It's going to be a humdinger of a World Cup in 2010, the first on the
African continent and people should grace the occasion with a positive
spirit. I have no doubt it will be a success and will be a great World
Cup. I encourage the world to come and see how Africans do it. It will
be one of a kind."
KALUSHA BWALYA
Kalusha Bwalya was the African Player of the Year in 1988. He has played
in six African Nations Cup tournaments for Zambia and at the 1988 Olympics
he scored a hat-trick in a 4-0 win for Zambia against Italy. He played
100 games for Zambia, scoring 50 goals and during his illustrious career
he played for PSV Eindhoven in Holland, Necaxa in Mexico and Cercle Brugges
in Belgium among others.
"Being an ambassador for the 2010 FIFA World Cup is a great source
of motivation for me. I tried unsuccessfully for many years as a player
with Zambia to qualify for the World Cup as a player and I am proud to
be associated with Africa's first World Cup. The occasion is very big,
but we as Africans are motivated. The hype and vibe in Africa has been
incredible since the announcement of the 2010 FIFA World Cup hosts and
we're overwhelmed by the power of the tournament. It's on everybody's
lips, it's like a whirlwind. Every moment it's in our bodies, in our thinking
and on our minds."
MARK FISH
Mark Fish was part of the Bafana Bafana team that won the African Nations
Cup on home soil in 1996. He played a total of 62 international matches
for South Africa and was part of the squad that played at the FIFA World
CupT at France 98. He has played for Jomo Cosmos, was in the Orlando Pirates
team that won the African Champions League in 1995. He has also played
for Lazio in the Serie A and for Charlton Athletic, Bolton Wanderers and
Ipswich Town in England.
"The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be a different one to all the rest.
People will come to South Africa not only for the football, but also to
experience South Africa and the many attractions the country has to offer.
South Africans are very hospitable. We welcome everyone with open arms.
And to all those contemplating coming to the 2010 World Cup, you've heard
all about South Africa and the African continent. Now come and see it
for yourself. For me, being a 2010 ambassador is a real honour, a chance
for me to give back the knowledge and experienced I gained in my football
career."
