Croatia-Russia clash was expected to give at least some
answers to the numerous questions pending in Group E.
However, a nill draw made things still more complicated in the race.
The opponents came out charged to win as Croatia seeked to strengthen
their position on top of the table while Russia seemed eager to topple
Croatia from the leading position.
Neither of the goals was achieved but Croatia were fairly closer to doing
so.
The hosts started right off the bat wih fierce attacks and though they
lost Darijo Srna through an injury they were far more dangerous in attack
than Russia as the latter could only boast one more or less decent attempt
on goal from Alexander Kerzhakov.
The situation did not change in the second half as Croatia kept up the
pressure on the Russian goal but the visiting side with the crossbar on
their side held out.
A free-kick from Sergei Ignashevich was the best opportunity the Russian
team had in the battle but Stipe Pletikosa made a fine stop.
In the closing minutes Croatia kept troubling Vyacheslav Malafeev but
never managed to figure him out.
The Russian goaltender spoke to Sport Express after the match.
"It was a tough game for us as the hosts maintained pressure on our
goal throughout the affair," said Malafeev.
"However, our defense was very good so there were no real threats
to our goal."
"I had to be on the alert each and every minute of the match but
practically all the shots came wide."
"Taking into account the way the teams played we are happy to settle
for a point."
England crushed Estonia 3:0 to stay in the race for qualification while
Israel caught up with Croatia beating Andorra 2:0.
Croatia are on top, ahead of Israel on goal difference, while Russia are
two points adrift with England a further point back.
