England legend Peter Beardsley believes Emile Heskey is
the perfect partner to get the best out of Michael Owen.
The former World Cup star formed one of the deadliest double acts for
England with Gary Lineker.
The Beardsley and Lineker partnership fired England into the quarter-finals
of the 1986 World Cup. Beardsley enjoyed tremendous success with Liverpool
and Newcastle during his career but was never as prolific as ex-Barcelona
star Lineker.
But he believes Heskey could prove to be a similar foil for fit-again
Owen, who will lead the line against Israel, as he hopes to get the nod
over Everton's Andy Johnson.
England boss Steve McClaren's decision to recall Heskey has brought derision
from pundits like Mirror Sport's Mark Lawrenson who believes it is a backward
step.
But Beardsley firmly believes that Wigan striker Heskey can form a lethal
understanding with Owen. Beardsley said: "It's quite normal that
one player often gets the plaudits for scoring goals and the other is
seen as the one who does a lot of work for the team.
"I had a great partnership with Gary and you get that from playing
a lot together and forming an understanding."
