The Russian national side arrived in London yesterday to start preparations
to Euro-2008 qualifier against England.
Clashes between Russia and England are roundly tipped as
the decisive ones in Group E and it is no wonder the teams now concentrate
on their face-to-face battles.
Though England are viewed as the favourites of the clash Russia's supporters
don't lose hope that the side led by Guus Hiddink will snatch points from
the formidable opponents.
Former captain of the Russian national side Viktor Onopko shared his views
on the match with Sport Express on his way to London.
"Russia will have to give 100%, the same way as the Englismen did
against Israel," said Viktor Onopko.
"I think the players are experienced enough to do without my advice
on how to prepare to clashes like this."
Vladimir Gabulov, Russia's keeper who was sent off for a foul in the area
and won't help Russia in the coming match, shared the veteran's opinion.
"Each and every player in the team knows perfectly well how to play
the most challenging slugfests."
"I analyzed the clash against Macedonia and I jumped up to the conclusion
that I could have saved without breaking the rules so I could have ecsaped
seeing red."
"Anyway I am flying to London with the team in order to keep up the
good atmosphere in the team which depends on its every member."
"There is nothing more difficult for a sportsman to know that you
can't help the team."
Torpedo goaltender Dmitry Borodin who has been brought in after Gabulov
got suspension is, on the contrary, very happy to be able to play for
the national side.
"It always makes you happy when they invite you to the national side,"
said Borodin to Sport Express.
"It is a great opportunity for me to change the setting as things
are not going extremely well in our team now."
