The Dutch specialist Guus Hiddink is roundly criticized
for having no respect towards Russia's opponents: England.
The British media have quoted Hiddink as saying that the English side
are overestimated and their players are not as good as they think themselves
to be.
However, these statements that outraged England so much are highly unlikely
to belong to Russia's manager.
Guus Hiddink has been always making a point of being polite and respectful
towards the opponents and well-aware of the fact that England-Russia clashes
are viewed as the crucial in Euro-2008 qualifying Group E chose to avoid
any commentary on the issue.
"I have not spoken to any English journalist lately," said Guus
Hiddink to Sport Express.
"I had a conversation with an Australian pressman but we talked mostly
about their side."
"All the quotations that are said to belong to me are made up."
"I did not make any assessments of England but the clash is impending
and some people are trying to heat up the interest."
"I think both Russian and English players understand perfectly well
that I could not say things like that and I hope they can tell quality
papers from yellow press."
"The Englishmen were not born yesterday and they know that I have
always respected and still respect the English Premier League."
"Their commitment and attitude to football have always caused my
admiration."
"I used to come here to watch Premier League clashes, to enjoy high
level football before I took the reins of the Russian side."
"In a word those who have been in football business for some time
understand that these words do not belong to me."
