Cape Town, South Africa - The Gautrain and stadium construction
projects, being prepared in readiness for the 2010 World Cup to be held
in South Africa, are drawing up major resources and inadvertently slowing
down progress elsewhere, officials said.
This is highlighted by the scarcity of cranes and drivers to man them.
"A substantial number of cranes are presently being used continuously
by both th e Gautrain construction and the 2010 stadiums, leaving us battling
to find cranes in order to replace substations and transformers swiftly,"
said Sydney Ma balayo, Director of Southern Power Maintenance, one of
the leading suppliers of power in the country.
He also expressed concerns about the current shortage of low-bed heavy
transport vehicles.
SA's construction industry, which is experiencing an unprecedented boom,
is also facing a severe shortage of trained artisans.
