Tomorrow's Zenit-CSKA clash will mark the centenary of
Saint Petersburg - Moscow football fight.
It was back in 1907 that a Moscow side first played a Saint Petersburg
side.
"I must say I was surprised to learn that it all began in 1907,"
said CSKA keeper Veniamin Mandrykin to Sport Express.
"Football came to Russia in 1897 so I thought the opposition of the
two cities started earlier."
"However, I don't think that the coming clash will be a continuation
to this opposition as there are six Moscow sides and only one team from
Saint Petersburg."
"We have nothing to do with Zenit clashes against Spartak and Dinamo,
for instance."
Zenit striker Andrei Arshavin was surprised to learn that the coming clash
will mark a milestone in Russian football.
"That's the first time I hear it but I think the idea is good,"
said Arshavin to Sport Express.
"I think that Saint Petersburg will always compete with Moscow and
not only on the football pitch."
"Moscow teams are ahead in this fight but it is only logical as the
best players have always been striving to play for a Moscow team."
"As for us, it was only a couple of years ago that we became a formidable
club."
"It is not easy to beat Moscow teams as they are really strong.
