McClaren hoping to have Terry fit for qualifiers

England boss Steve McClaren is hopeful captain John Terry will be fit for the forthcoming Euro 2008 qualifiers against Estonia and Russia.

Terry has undergone surgery after suffering a depressed fracture of the cheekbone in Chelsea's draw with Fulham yesterday.

Chelsea have also expressed confidence that star defender Terry will be able to make a quick return to training.

McClaren said: 'He is OK. He has had an operation and we will see what the outcome is but knowing John Terry he will want to be there.'

Striker Michael Owen has also revealed there is an outside chance he could be fit for the double-header.

England face Estonia at Wembley on October 13 before playing in Moscow four days later.

Owen has just undergone successful surgery for a stomach problem and is also recovering from a a torn adductor muscle.

His comeback target is Newcastle's Premier League game with Tottenham on October 22 but will 'cling to the hope' he could return sooner.

McClaren added: 'These players want to play for England. They know how important the games are.

'We have still got time. I know from when I name the squad we still won't know who is going to be fit as there are still games to go, but that is international management.

'We will know what we have got when we assemble on the Monday.'
