Spurs target headed for Russia?
Sevilla's Russian striker Aleksandr Kerzhahkov, who was rumoured to be
interesting Spurs during the January sales could now be returning to his
homeland to link up with ambitious Russian side Dynamo Moscow. Kerzhahkov
has found himself on the edge of the Sevilla side and has appeared only
sporadically for the side currently in 7th in La Liga this season and
could well be open to a move away from Andalusia.
Tottenham were thought to be weighing up a move for the former Zenit St.
Petersburg striker potentially re-uniting Kerzhahkov with Juande Ramos
under whom he enjoyed a fruitful spell at Sevilla, especially last season
knocking in 6 goals in 17 games.
Such a link certainly made sense although the striker himself pledged
his future to Sevilla despite the interest not only from Spurs but also
PSG, Marseille and apparently Manchester City. The Russian striker stayed
true to his word and remained at Sevilla but his ongoing lack of first
team action may force the striker, whose goals helped Russia to Euro 2008,
to reconsider his stance.
Although involved earlier on in the qualifying tournament notching goals
against both Estonia and a hat-trick against Andorra in the early games,
he wasn't involved later in the qualifying loosing his place to Zenit
pair Pavel Pobgrevniak and Andrei Arshavin, who played both crucial matches
against England. With the tournament only a few months away Kerzhahkov
will be desperate to get some first team football under his belt and may
be open to a move.
Although Kerzhahkov now can't move to the Premiership because of the transfer
window the opportunity to move to Dynamo Moscow still exists. Dynamo had
a promising season last time out in the Russian league being one of a
phalanx of Muscovite clubs that finished behind eventual winners Zenit
in November. The race to be the best Muscovite club is becoming increasingly
fraught as Spartak, Lokomotiv, CSKA and Dynamo all compete for the position
as best club from the Russian capital.
Therefore a move for Kerzhahkov would make sense as his record of 95 goals
in just over 200 appearances for Zenit indicates that he would be more
or less guarantee for goals at Russian league level.
