South Africa: energy crisis won't affect 2010 World Cup

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa - The energy crisis in South Africa will not
affect the 2010 World Cup, the state electricity company said Tuesday.
Eskom director Johnny Dladla said resources would be allocated to ensure
there were no power cuts during the tournament.
A crippling electricity shortage has disrupted the country's vital mining
sector, triggering a 60 billion rand (C$8 billion) five-year rescue plan.
Dladla briefed FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke at a board meeting
of the local organizing committee on Tuesday.
A recent FIFA inspection team said it was happy with progress made over
stadium construction.
"The inspection visit went very well," Valcke said. "For
the World Cup we are all on track."
The local committee said the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in Port Elizabeth,
one of the World Cup venues, may not be ready in time for the 2009 FIFA
Confederations Cup.
