WORLD CUP' 2010

England-US Friendly at Wembley Confirmed

Raise your pints, because the U.S. National Team is finally returning to Wembley.

The rumors are now no longer rumors. The U.S. Soccer Federation confirmed on Wednesday that the U.S. National Team will face England at Wembley on May 28. It is the first trip to London for the Yanks since 1994, and the first meeting between the two teams since a 2-1 England victory in Chicago, coincidentally on the same date in 2005.

U.S. head coach Bob Bradley sees the game as an important test for the United States ahead of this summer's World Cup qualifiers.

'We have consistently said that one of our goals is to play matches against good opponents and in environments that will really challenge our team,' said Bradley in a statement. 'In addition to the quality of the English team, the tradition and passion for the sport in that country, the media focus, and the intensity of the fans all combine to make this a fantastic opportunity for our group.'

The last time these two met in London, in September 1994, England beat the U.S., 2-0, thanks to two strikes from Alan Shearer. The score could've been much worse, as England, which failed to qualify for that summer's 1994 World Cup, avenged a devastating 2-0 loss to the U.S. in a friendly in 1993.

Both the U.S. and English national teams are gearing up for the start of World Cup 2010 qualifying this summer. The U.S. take on either Barbados or Dominica in a home-and-away series in June, while England meet Andorra and Croatia in September. In preparation, England travel to France for a friendly against Les Bleus next week, while the U.S. visits Poland and Spain, with an additional glamor friendly likely in the works against Argentina on June 8 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

'We are very pleased with the schedule we have put together to help us prepare for World Cup qualifying,' Bradley said.

England holds a 6-2-0 record alltime. The most famous match between the two sides came at the 1950 World Cup, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, where the U.S. stunned the powerful Brits, 1-0.
