Zenit halfback Roman Shirokov hopes to make his debut appearance
for the Russian national team in tomorrow's friendly match against Romania.
"I was first capped by the national team's coaching staff ahead of
our home England qualifier", said Shirokov to Sport Express.
"Actually I didn't take part in the team pre-match preparations and
trained with my then-club Khimki."
"Alexander Borodyuk told me that Ivan Saenko picked an injury and
I was invited to the national side to fill the gap left by Saenko's absence."
"This offer came as a surprise for me then because I didn't expect
the coaches would pay their attention to my display."
"This time I am not surprise with Guus Hiddink's call for Romania
friendly."
"I didn't watch Romanian team in action, but I think the fact they
left behind Holland in Euro-2008 qualifying round tells me a lot."
"To my mind it doesn't matter in which club the candidate to the
national team plays."
"However those who wear the uniform of the country's leading club
improve their level as they get an opportunity to collect unique experience
by playing in the European competitions."
"Maybe Hiddink will give special preference for those players who
can already boast some international experience, but I think it's not
the key factor."
