Egyptian midfielder Shawky may miss World Cup qualifier
opener
Cairo, Egypt - Egyptian international midfielder Mohamed Shawky may be
absent from Egypt's squad for the opening match of the 2010 World Cup
qualifier due to an injury.
The midfielder was left out of the last match for his English premiership
side Middlesbrough due to the back pains from which he has been suffering
in recent weeks.
The two-time African champions begin their group 12 qualification at home
against the Democratic Republic of Congo in the first weekend of June.
The Pharaohs will then play an away match in Djibouti and another home
match against Malawi.
Shawky, who was a star for the national side during their Nations Cup
in Ghana earlier this year, will be sorely missed.
Analysts believe the North Africans could easily win all the matches in
the first round, with the tie against DR Congo expected to provide the
biggest test.
Egypt last qualified for a World Cup in 1990 and exited that tournament
in the first round.
Egyptians believe the forthcoming qualifiers present their team the best
chance to secure another World Cup ticket, given the favourable first
round draw and the back-to-back wins in the African Cup of Nations.
